Lt. Cmdr. J.R. Kelly Dies at Cape May
Lt. Commander James Richard Kelly, 39, formerly a practicing attorney of Monterey, succumbed suddenly to a heart attack on April 1, at the Naval Air Station, Cape May, New Jersey, according to word received today from his family. Lt. Commander Kelly was born near Cambridge, Nebraska, and was taken in his childhood to Danbury, Nebraska, where he received his education and taught school for a short time before entering the University of Nebraska. Following his graduation from the law school in 1932, he practiced for five years in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he was president for a year of the Lincoln chapter of Delta Theta Phi, professional law fraternity. He came to Monterey in 1937, leaving his practice of law here to enlist in the navy in March, 1942. He was commissioned in naval aviation in the fall of 1943, and assigned to the naval Air station at Cape May, were he continued to serve until his death. Since his advance to the rank of lieutenant commander, he had served as personnel officer. He was a member of Lincoln Masonic Lodge No. 19. He leaves his mother, Mrs. William H. Kelly of McCook, Nebraska, two sisters, Mrs. Lelia Puelz of McCook and Miss Mildred Kelly of San Francisco, a brother, Dale Kelly of St. Francis, Kansas, and a number of aunts and uncles. Funeral services were held in McCook and burial took place in the family plot of the cemetery at Cambridge, Nebraska.
