San Francisco Chronicle, CA March 12, 1985
A memorial service will be held tomorrow in Pacific Grove for James Page van Loben Sels, former manager of the Southern Pacific Land Co.'s natural resources division. Mr. van Loben Sels, a fourth-generation Californian from a large family of growers and land developers, died Saturday of cancer at Monterey Peninsula Community Hospital. He was 72. Mr. van Loben Sels was manager of the Southern Pacific division from 1964 until his retirement in 1971. The company, now a unit of Santa Fe Southern Pacific Corp., is the largest private landowner in California. Born Jan. 4, 1913, in Chico, Mr. van Loben Sels graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1935 with a bachelor's degree in economics. He returned to Chico and worked as a rancher until the start of World War II. During the war, he served as a lieutenant colonel in the China-Burma-India theater under General Joseph Stilwell. After returning from the war, Mr. van Loben Sels went to work for the Irvine Co. as an agronomist. He joined Southern Pacific in 1950 in Hanford and served as agronomist and assistant manager of its land department - now the natural resources department -until becoming its manager in 1964. He lived in San Francisco until his retirement in 1971, when he moved to Carmel. During his tenure at Southern Pacific, Mr. van Loben Sels was a director of the Westlands Water District and helped bring about the development of the California Aqueduct and San Luis Reservoir. Mr. van Loben Sels is survived by his wife, Marguerite, of Carmel; a brother in Bakersfield; a son, James, who is an Army brigadier general serving in West Germany; a daughter, Christina McEuen of Woodland, and six grandchildren. His first wife of 28 years, Phyllis Manuel, died in 1963. The memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. tomorrow at Pacific Grove's Little Chapel by the Sea, 65 Asilomar Avenue. His family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.
