Infant Succumbs to Hammer Wounds
One-year-old James C. Mason, struck with a claw hammer Monday afternoon, died early today in the County Hospital at Salinas and Deputy District Attorney Gordon Campbell said he would seek to have the child’s mother declared insane and sent to a state hospital. The mother, Mrs. Elsie V. mason, 33, was given a preliminary hearing yesterday before Justice of the Peace Ray Baugh and held for superior court on a charge of assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury. Later yesterday, while the child was still alive, Campbell filed a petition for a sanity hearing in superior court. The case will be heard next week at Salinas, he said. Although Campbell had said earlier that a murder charge might be filed against Mrs. Mason if the baby died, he indicated today that this course would not be followed in view of the mother’s mental condition. Despite a concussion and multiple skull fractures, baby James lived from 4 p.m. Monday until 4:30 a.m. today. The father, John C. Mason, 38, a state game warden, was notified by the hospital that his child had died. The claw hammer attack took place in the mason home at Big Sur State Park while the father was at work. When Mason came home and found the child beaten, and his wife holding the hammer, he brought them both to Carmel Hospital, where Mrs. Mason was taken into custody. The child later was transferred to Salinas.

Mother Charged With Assault on Year-old Son
Mrs. Elsie V. Mason, a slender, drawn-faced woman of 33, heard herself charged today with assaulting “with force likely to produce great bodily injury” her one-year-old son, James, and then was held to answer to the superior court. Timidly and uncertainly she stood before Justice of the Peace Ray Baugh at a preliminary hearing, while her infant son lay in critical condition in the county hospital in Salinas, his skull fractured in several places from the blows of a claw hammer. Her husband, John C. Mason, 38, buried his face in his hands as he told the court how he came home to their cabin at Big Sur State Park Monday night to find the door locked and the radio playing. He said he saw his wife in the bedroom, bending over the bay. He called to her and she opened the door, leading him to the baby. He told how he took the hammer from his wife’s hand and how she said “I’ve killed Jim.” Mrs. Mason was returned to the county hospital, the same place to which her baby was transferred yesterday from the Carmel hospital.
