Army Officer Succumbs to Heart Attack
Funeral services were held at the Paul Mortuary Tuesday, August 14 for Major Otto Frederick Schroeder, who died suddenly from a heart attack August 11, while in his office at Fort Ord. His death came as a shock to his family and friends, as the 50-year-old Army officer had apparently been in the best of health. A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Major Schroeder attended the Milwaukee schools. In 1919 he joined the National Guard, and in 1939 was called to active duty. Following the outbreak of World War II, he spent four years in the South pacific. At the end of the war he was stationed at Fort Louis, Washington, and in June of 1947 was transferred to Fort Ord. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Wilske Schroeder, who resides at the family home on 1123 Beacon avenue, Pacific Grove; his son, Clyde Schroeder and his mother, Mrs. Frieda Leich, all of Pacific Grove. Major Schroeder was a member of Scottish Rite, Wisconsin Lodge No. 13 F&AM Milwaukee. The last rites were conducted by Chaplain Paul W. Ludden of Fort Ord assisted by the Pacific Grove Masonic Lodge. Pall bearers were Major Lawrence J. Nelson, Capt. Clifford L. Young, Capt. David S. Marshall, Maj. Wm. G. White, Lt. Col. Stnley Lauferski, Maj. Harrison W. Pells, Capt. George C. Critchlow and Capt. Robert E. Hale. Burial took place in the El Carmelo Cemetery.
