E.B. Rich, Colorful Pioneer of Pacific Grove, Dies Here
Former City Marshall Passes at Home Following Brief Illness; Funeral Held in Grove

When funeral services were held here Wednesday afternoon for E.B. Rich, Pacific Grove paid its final respects to one of the most beloved citizens. A residence of more than 30 years in Pacific Grove came to an end for Rich when he died last Monday at his home at 808 Ocean View avenue following a brief illness. He had reached the age of 81. Much of the history of this community can be told in terms of Richís colorful life, for he came to Pacific Grove to make his home shortly after the founding of the town. From 1899 until 1913 he served continuously as city marshall and tax collector. For years he was connected with the Pacific Grove fire department, playing a leading role in its development, almost from the time of its organization. Lead Active Life. Rich continued his active interest in community affairs until the time of his death. During the last general election, he served as a member of the elections board. His funeral was held at Paulís mortuary with the Odd Fellows lodge conducting the services. Burial followed in El Carmelo cemetery. Born in Boston, Rich came to California in 1888, moving immediately to the Grove. Surviving relations include the widow, Mrs. E.B. Rich; a daughter, Mrs. W.C. Gretter; a son, C.E. Rich of Los Angeles; four grandchildren, Miss J. Gretter, E.M. Rich, Miss M. Rich and G.S. Rich; and one great-grandchild, Douglas Randolph Rich. Hundreds mourn. Mr. and Mrs. Rich left Pacific Grove in 1914, where Rich made his home and joined the staff of an Oakland hotel. In 1924 the couple returned to Pacific Grove to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, and returned again in 1928 to resume their old residence here. Throughout his life Rich remained a courageous officer and a genial gentleman, his passing is the occasion of the deepest regret by hundreds of Peninsula residents.

Edwin B. Rich, age 81, died in Monterey County, Oct. 30, 1933, #61002
