Death Claims C.J. Cass of Monterey
Death came early this morning for Charles J. Cass, a resident of Monterey for nearly half a century. Mr. Cass died in a local hospital after a long illness. He was born June 7, 1878, in Pennsylvania, but was taken by his family in his infancy to New York, where he spent his early years. He enlisted in the Army July 10, 1899, serving during the Spanish American War in Cuba and the Philippines. After his discharge in 1901, he reentered the service, and was stationed for a time at the Monterey Presidio, before returning to civilian life. He and his wife, Anna, were married in Salinas 47 years ago, and came at that time to establish a permanent home on the Peninsula. For many years Mr. Cass operated a transfer company here, and served with the volunteer fire department in New Monterey. He was a member of the Monterey chapter, Veterans of Foreign Wars. The family home is at 724 Cypress street, Monterey. In addition to his wife, he leaves a son, Edward J. Cass of San Francisco; a brother, James A. Cass of New York; a sister, Mrs. Anna Breslin of Florida, and one granddaughter. Funeral services are pending at the Dorney and Farlinger Chapel and will be announced later.
