Lloyd Allen Phinney of Watsonville died Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at the Watsonville Community Hospital following a lengthy illness. Mr. Phinney was born Nov. 19, 1923, in Calais, Maine. While serving in World War II in France, he met and married his French bride, Solange Gabrielle Duthie on July 17, 1945. He moved with his family to Salinas, where he worked at Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. from 1965 until its closure in 1981. He was the warehouse supervisor. His last job was for civil service at Ford Ord from 1981 until retirement in 1992. With all four children grown, he and his wife moved to Watsonville in 1984, being active in the community, attending city council meetings, etc. He enjoyed hiking, camping, watching baseball and traveling throughout the United States and to his wife's family in her native, France. He was preceded in death by his son, Jack Phinney of Salinas on May 30, 1977; his brother, Ivan Phinney in 1980; and his sister, Maxine Phinney in 1948, both from Lubec, Maine. Military Service: He joined the Army Air Corps at age 19 and served for two years. He served during World War II. After returning home to the states for a short time, he re-enlisted in the U.S. Army in Fort Dix, N.J. He served until his retirement in Fort Hood, Texas, in August 1965. Survivors: Beloved wife of 58 years, Solange of Watsonville; daughters, Lillian Dolen of Lake Elsinore, Carole Anloff of Carmel Valley and Marie Barnes of Gilroy; grandchildren, David Phinney of Jasper, Ala., Kirk Phinney of Poway, Tara Phinney of Cape Fair, Mo., Shane Downey of Las Vegas, Matthew Foster of Gilroy and Christine Anloff of Carmel Valley; six great-grandchildren; and brother, Harold Phinney of Tucson, Ariz. Services: At Mr. Phinney's request, there will be a private family memorial service. Inurnment: Will be at El Carmelo Cemetery, 100 Asilomar Blvd., Pacific Grove. Arrangements: The Paul Mortuary, 390 Lighthouse Ave., Pacific Grove. Memorials: American Cancer Society, 1184 Monroe St., Suite 1, Salinas, CA 93906-3590.
