Birth registrations were required within the State of California beginning in the year 1905. However, it took many years to implement fully the law within the County of Plumas. Unless a family lived in or near the county seat, birth records often were never filed up until about the year 1920. Therefore, many births that occurred within Plumas County prior to the year 1920 were not recorded. This index does NOT include delayed births (birth records filed, sometimes years, after the event). Birth records in Plumas County prior to 1905 are extremely sparse and none are included here.

The law requiring the recording of birth registrations for the Maidu Tribe was not actively enforced by the County of Plumas prior to the year 1920. Many Maidu births within Plumas County went unrecorded as late as the 1960’s.

There are several ‘Unnamed’ infants within this index. Because of the high mortality rate for infants in the early years of Plumas County, many families did not give their children a Christian name until after the baby was at least several months old. Some of the unnamed infants also perished at birth or were stillborn.
