 County Coordinator Web Site Requirements

Basic County Page Requirements

There are a few basic requirements that every county page must meet in order to be associated with our project and be included on the Master Index Page for the main state page.

If you have not already done so, you need to join the mailing lists for the state coordinators. This is where we discuss all matters having to do with the project.

Every main Web page must include an introductory paragraph that identifies you as a member of the CAGenWeb Project and must have a pointer to the Master USGenWeb State page maintained by the state coordinator. (There should also be a note telling people that if they have an interest in adopting a county of their own, they should contact the state coordinator and give his/her E-mail address).

Every County Web site must provide a history of the county.

Every County should provide for reference books or lookups. You may list whatever resources you have in your personal library, offering to do lookups in them. You should also provide a place on the lookup pages where other volunteers could, if they wish, volunteer to do look ups. You might also list other books that have been published on your county and ask for others that have these books to volunteer to do lookups.

Every County Web site must provide a query page, for users to post queries for people who lived in or passed through your county.

You should also have The USGenWeb Project logo on the top of your main web pages (Main page, lookup or reference page, history page, and query page. Currently you can use any USGenWeb logo approved versions. You can go to http://www.usgenweb.org/volunteers/logos.shtml to see the official logos approved by The USGenWeb Project.

These are some links that would be good to have included on your Links Page. Although the following links are not mandatory, you may want to include them on your page for the convenience of those visiting your page.

Beyond these few "bare essentials", your page is yours to do with as you please. Should there be any changes made in the basic requirements, you will be notified on the mailing list and this message will be updated.

As new county pages are put up on the web, they are checked by someone on the evaluation committee for the required elements and to be sure your links work. Your evaluator will let you know when they have visited your page. If there are any problems with links or any required elements missing, they will let you know so you may make any changes or corrections. Post a message to your state mail list when you are ready for your page to be checked.

It is the policy of the USGenWeb Project to obtain permission from the creator of any code, graphics, and backgrounds before using them on our pages. If you find yourself having used someone's code without their permission, please either obtain that permission or remove that feature from your pages.

Duties of a County Coordinator

There are a few basic duties that every county coordinator must do in order to be responsible for a county page in this project.

Those Duties are:

  • Create the following web pages:
    • a MAIN county Web page
    • a history page
    • a query page
    • a lookup or reference page
If you are taking over from another coordinator you can modify the existing pages. These pages must meet the Requirements listed above. (You don't need to understand how to set up Web pages, we can help you with that aspect of the project. Once you become a coordinator we can give you more details on HTML editing.)

  • You are  responsible for adding query requests to the county query page. These requests will come from your query page by e-mail. If you prefer you can use one of the automated BBS systems - The CAGenWeb Project has BBS' available for your use - Please contact Cat Nielsen, she can set one up for you.

  • A "Lookup Page is to be maintained for reference book lookups. If you like, you may list whatever resources you have in your personal library, offering to do lookups in them. You should provide a place on the lookup pages where other volunteers could, if they wish, volunteer to do look ups. You might also list other books that have been published about your county and ask for others that have these books to volunteer to do lookups.

  • You need to keep up with the CAGenWeb coordinators mail lists (see below). This is where important information for coordinators will be posted. We also periodically do Roll Calls there. This is where we discuss all matters having to do with the project.

Download Sample Pages

Take a look at various County Pages, we allow a lot of personal flexibility in Web work, please keep in mind one fact,  the large majority of our visiting Researchers are over '50 years of age', keep your fonts simple and at least 10 point and your backgrounds uncluttered and neutral colors. Red or blue lettering on a black background will not be pleasing to the eye.

Helpful Web Building Information

We welcome you to the California portion of The USGenWeb Project. If you need assistance with getting your webpage up and running, don't hesitate to ask the State Coordinator, Martha A Crosley Graham, or post a request to the state mailing list. And, with a little bit of detective work using the Internet, you can get HTML information just about anywhere online.

Did you know, the USGenWeb site offers a great page of html tools?? Check it out:  http://usgenweb.org/volunteers/design.shtml

A good site to visit and print out the primer for reference about HTML is located at: http://htmldog.com/guides/htmlbeginner/ .
Another great resource site is: http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_intro.asp - part of the W3C tools.

A great site with many free tips and tools is Bravenet: http://www.bravenet.com/

For some basics on web design, we have put together a special web page for you to use as reference.
