Land, Faith M.
Sacramento Bee, Dec 23, 1949

Mrs. Faith M. Land, 26 year old mother of six children, died today of injuries to her head suffered when she jumped in front of a Western Pacific freight train while her daughter, Patty Lou, 7 , watched in horror. Tip C. Land, her husband, said he and his wife, who had been under a doctor's care for nervous disorder, argued while they and Patty Lou whose nickname is Sissie, were riding around in the family car. When they stopped in front of the Land home at Forty Seventh and Woodbine Avenues, Land got out and Mrs. Land and Sissie drove away.

`Look The Other Way' Sissie told Sheriff's Deputies Merwin Stapp and George Dawson that as they approached the Forty Seventh Avenue crossing of the railroad track, which is a short distance from their home, her mother said: "Tell your dad I love him very much and always will. Now don't watch what I'm going to do. Look the other way." She ran from the car which had not quite stopped moving and dropped between the railroad tracks in front of the eastbound train. Sissie, momentarily paralyzed by the sight of the locomotive passing over her mother, sat clutching the handle of the car door. Then she screamed and ran home to sob out the story to her father.

Motorist Saw Leap Eugene Kranig of 3101 Thirty Second Street, a motorist who had stopped on the opposite side of the crossing, told investigators he saw Mrs. Land jump from the car and in front of the train. After the train passed, he said, she was lying between the tracks with her clothes virtually ripped off. Engineer R. L. Grubbs and Fireman A. E. Lee, both of Stockton, San Joaquin County, told the investigators they saw the woman drop in front of the train, but did not have time to stop. Mrs. William E. Yeager, whose home is near the crossing, thought the train had hit an automobile and called the highway patrol. Sergeant J. A. Bryant and Patrolman W. L. Layton called an ambulance to take Mrs. Land to Sacramento Hospital. Emergency surgery was performed in a futile effort to save her life. She suffered a fracture of the skull and other injuries. She died without regaining consciousness. Land told the deputies his wife had been brooding ever since his younger brother, Dennis, was killed last June 11th when a truck and trailer loaded with lumber ran over him. Land said he was the driver of the truck.

Premonition Comes True Members of the family said that at almost the moment of that tragedy, which occurred on the Forbestown Road near Oregon House in Yuba County, Mrs. Land ran from her home and told neighbors she knew something had happened to her husband and his brother. When she learned that her premonition had been borne out, she started brooding. Land and his brothers and parents tried to persuade Mrs. Land to forget the incident and stop brooding. Land took her on a trip and quit his job as a truck driver, Another brother, Dank, of Marysville, Yuba County, also quit driving trucks trucks in an attempt to allay any fears she might have had of impending tragedy if they continued to drive.

Lived in Marysville Land, his parents and brothers, resided in Marysville for about 20 years. Tip moved his family to their present address about a year ago. His parents reside outside Sacramento on Stockton boulevard. Children surviving in addition to Sissie are Patricia Ann, 9, Michael, 5, Mary Jo, 4, Dennis, 3, and Gail, 1 ½. Members of the family said funeral services are expected to be held in Marysville with burial probably beside Dennis in the Sierra View Memorial Park here.
