Santa Barbara Public Library c. 1930

GENEALOGICAL/HISTORICAL PERIODICALS AND NEWSPAPERS AT THE

SANTA BARBARA PUBLIC LIBRARY

Compiled by Cari Thomas, 9 Apr 2003 and updated February 3, 2005, with thanks to the Santa Barbara Public Library staff

This is a listing of mostly non-catalogued items of historical and/or genealogical value located at the Central Branch of the Santa Barbara Public Library, 40 East Anapamu Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93101. Mailing address: P.O. Box 1019, Santa Barbara, CA 93012. Telephone 805.564.5604: this is a direct line to the Reference Desk, which accepts calls during these hours: Mon. thru Thurs: 10 am - 9 PM; Fri. and Sat: 10 am - 5:30 PM. The Reference Desk is also open to walk-in service (but not phone service) on Sundays from 1 - 5 PM.

The Santa Barbara Public Library - Central Branch answers requests for SPECIFIC look-ups, for instance: obituaries from their newspaper files. If an exact date of death (dod) is not known, they will check the Social Security Death Index or the California Death Index; but if the dod is not established, your request will be returned. With an exact dod, the library staff will search the newspaper for an obituary for ten days following dod. An obituary request may be sent to volunteer lookup.

Through interlibrary loan services, the Santa Barbara Public Library loans a limited number of microfilm reels of their holdings of local newspapers. If you wish to request Santa Barbara County newspapers, refer to the list below, then contact your local public library to initiate requests.

The Santa Barbara Public Library system also has more than 1700 entries in 600+ topics under the subject heading of “Genealogy” in its on-line searchable catalog :http://www.sbplibrary.org.  Among these are City Directories of Santa Barbara: 1875; 1895-1896; 1901; 1903-present (Genealogy, Locked Case, and Telephone Directories); the “Personal Name Index To ‘The New York Times Index,’ 1851-1999” (main floor; left of staircase); and the source books “Newspapers in Microform” (Reference).
