Genealogy
Research at UCSB
Established in 1972, the Santa Barbara County Genealogical Society was incorporated in 1986 as a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization by a group of Santa Barbara genealogists living in the Santa Barbara County area. Its purpose is to promote study and research in genealogy by providing assistance and educational opportunities for those who are interested in pursuing their family history. It also aids in the collection and preservation of genealogical records, supports a library specializing in genealogy and local history, and holds meetings to provide information and continuing education on genealogical subjects.
Today the genealogy collection in the SBCGS Library has grown to over 9000 volumes and over 450 CD-ROMs and is still increasing due to the generosity of over 600 members of the Society.
The Society is a non-profit organization, open to all interested genealogists. Dues are $40 per year for an individual or $60 for a family (husband and wife). Each subscribing household receives a copy of the monthly newsletter Tree Tips, and the quarterly journal, Ancestors West. Membership brochures can be obtained at the Society's Sahyun Library at 316 Castillo Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93101, or by mail request with a SASE to the Society at PO Box 1303, Goleta, CA 93116-1303, or print our on-line Membership Application and mail in.

President Art Sylvester and Lecturer Dawn Thurston
Following a very successful all-day Saturday seminar in the First Presbyterian Church social hall, Art Sylvester and Dawn Thurston are discussing the topic of creative family history. Dawn had shared some of her extensive knowledge on the topic that day with a large receptive audience. Ms. Thurston teaches writing at Santiago Canyon College in Orange, California, and presenting the topic of writing a creative family history to the genealogists in her audience on March 29th was a welcome and inspiring experience for everyone.
Members have abstracted early S.B. newspaper entries for 1868-1875 that have also been published in Ancestors West. An index is on this web site at Index.
In 1996 several members hiked to Potter's Field (also known as the Hospital Cemetery) where they located 65 of the original 100 tombstones, cleaned and repositioned them. In addition, they cleaned out trash and weeds. On December 6, 1998, and again in December 2000 and February 2003 members hiked to the cemetery to pull weeds, rake and cleanup. These before and after photos were taken at this cleanup.

May 17, 2008
Speaker: Dr. Patricia Cohen
On the Trail of Edgar Allan Poe's "Beloved Physician": An investigation of love, sex, death, adultery, and murder in 19th-century New York.
On Saturday, May 17, Dr. Cohen will share with us her professional research techniques, by way of her current research project into the life of a medical practitioner and water-cure doctor in New York City who nursed Edgar Allan Poe’s wife through her final illness and remained friendly with Poe after his wife’s death. While fairly well-known to Poe scholars, the doctor’s background history has heretofore been overlooked.
In addition to deploying a resourceful scholar’s focus and organization skills, Dr. Cohen engages a genealogist’s curiosity in researching her subjects – contacting descendants, searching titles of buildings and wills from the surrogate’s court, and accessing archived newspapers – to piece their stories together. Early indications are Dr. Cohen is uncovering a very complex and interesting life story, set in mid-19th century New York City. She will be sharing with us not only her modus operandi for methodically uncovering this (and other) historical gems, but also giving us a “sneak peak” into a story that will breath new life into not only the doctor, but possibly Poe as well.
Come and join us on May 17, 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church, 21 E. Constance Avenue at State Street. Please park in the upper lot off of Constance. The meeting begins at 10:30 a.m. Special Interest Groups start at 9:30 a.m. and are a great way to start your morning. Come early and plan to participate a group and enjoy refreshments and coffee.
There is ample free parking in the church’s lot and the facility is handicapped accessible. For additional information, please contact Mary Hall.

June 21st Program: Scoundrels, Saints & Spice!
We’re adding a little balance to our June “Scoundrel” program by also highlighting “saints” you’ve uncovered in your family tree. If you’ve discovered an unsung saint, a charming scoundrel, or a little family spice, please share your story with the society. The techniques you used to lure them out of anonymity will be as interesting as the characters and their deeds themselves, and you’ll undoubtedly find your research becomes much more “focused” when you have the opportunity to present to our membership.
Contact Programs Chair, Mary E. Hall at mehall2@cox.net for more information and to arrange to present your saint or scoundrel or spice in our June program.
