Lemon Labels are the rage again for people who love history and nostalgic items. These are the original labels used by the Goleta, California lemon companies through the 1950s. The colorful labels were placed on the ends of the wooden crates used to ship the lemons all over the country. The heyday of the labels was during the 1920s and 1930s, and were designed by recognized artists and commercial lithographers. These appeal not only to the collector of nostalgia and history, but also are recognized as representing some of the finest examples of graphic art produced in America. The pictures were usually interesting places or idyllic scenes by which the companies hoped to attract lemon buyers and to identify the type, brand, and grade of the produce. The Johnston Fruit Company in Santa Barbara County used labels from the 1880s and the Goleta Lemon Association from 1935 to well into the 1950s. Each year the growers ordered several designs from the lithographers to represent their various grades of fruit. The labels were ordered in multiples of thousands and growers would change the labels much the way advertising copy changes today. Now the original labels can be obtained from our Society. The above six labels can be purchased from the Santa Barbara County Genealogical Society for $2.00 each. Quantity amounts of these six labels can be purchased from us for $75 per 100 labels, and $50 per 50 labels.
In addition, we have other labels in limited amounts, such as the La Patera and the Panama shown below. Prices vary according to supplies worldwide.
