MADISON

John H. Madison

John H. Madison died Feb. 13, 2005, at his home near Ithaca, N.Y. Described as a colorful character and lover of plants, he was 87.

Born on the banks of the Mississippi River, he shared his childhood between Burlington, Iowa, and Hartford, Conn. In Hartford, he attended vocational school and was trained as a machinist before going on to Oberlin College. His studies were interrupted when the United States entered World War II.

At that time there was a critical shortage of skilled metal workers. He left Oberlin to work as a tool and die maker for Colt Arms in Connecticut, then entered the U.S. Army Corps in 1944 and served the remainder of the war as an airplane mechanic.

After completing Oberlin, he started a career in farming in Ohio, and later in New York state where he earned a doctorate degree in plant physiology at Cornell University while continuing to farm.

In 1953, he joined the faculty at UC Davis, where he was a professor of landscape horticulture for nearly 30 years.

He was passionate about growing plants and had a vast knowledge of botany and horticulture. He was instrumental in founding the UC Davis Arboretum and was a frequent speaker and adviser on horticulture throughout California.

His family said his interest extended beyond his own garden, and he practiced his own brand of gueerilla horticulture, planting trees wherever he thought they were appropriate without concern for whose land it was. A fig tree that he planted in the northwest corner of Redwood Park in Davis is still there.

He was also an ardent protector of the walnut trees that line the western stretch of Russell Boulevard when they were threatened to be taken down.

He was an early president of the Unitarian Church during his years in Davis from 1953 to 1980.

Following retirement from UC Davis, he lived in Mendocino County where he was active in the California Native Plant Society, editing its newsletter, leading nature walks and writing botanical field guides to interesting sites. He traveled extensively around the world.

At the age of 80, he returned to Ithaca, N.Y., and bought a farm where he planted a wide selection of heirloom apple varieties.

He is survived by his former wife, Winifred Madison of Davis; daughter, Deborah Madison and her husband Patrick McFarlin of Santa Fe, N.M.; son, Michael Madison and his wife Diane of Davis; daughter, Jamie Madison and her husband Manfred Kusch of Davis; and son, Roger Madison and his wife Tara Watt of Davis.

He is further survived by his grandchildren, Miles Kusch of Portland, Ore.; and Lindsay Madison, Maia Madison, Julian Madison and Marcus Madison, all of Davis.

The family would like to express their deep appreciation for the care that he received from Penny and Larry Wilson throughout his decline due to Alzheimer's disease.

A service was held in New York on Feb. 16. A private celebration of his life will be held in Davis in March.

MAHANEY

Jack LeRoy Mahaney (1st of 2 obits.)

In Loving Memory of Jack LeRoy Mahaney

Jack left this world suddenly on Jan. 8, 2005 during what was expected to be routine cardiac bypass surgery. Otherwise healthy and active, we only have consolation now that Jack outwitted us one more time. Always a leader, never a follower, his family, friends and community will miss him forever. He was a great role model, was always resourceful and sensitive with a healthy sense of humor.

Born in Webb City, Mo. Nov. 27, 1924, Jack moved to Tulsa, Okla. in 1926 with his mother, Christine Mahaney. In January of 1943 while only a senior in high school, he volunteered into the U.S. Navy and served in the North and South Pacific. After two years, he was released into inactive duty at the end of W.W. II. Jack finished high school at night while also attending National Trade School acquiring an Automotive Technician Certificate.

In September 1949 Jack attended Tulsa University as a Petroleum Engineering student and transferred to Oklahoma State University in 1950. His education was interrupted again in July of 1950 when recalled to active Naval duty for the Korean War. Jack received a final Naval Discharge at the end of the Korean War in October 1951.

"By this time," Jack wrote "I gave up finishing college." In January of 1952, he began a 35-year career with Texaco Oil Company in Oklahoma. He was transferred to California and worked in the oil fields. In 1957, he tackled education yet again, but through correspondence school and received a Certificate in Petroleum Engineering Technology.

His career with Texaco took him and his family throughout California and Alaska. In 1968 he was promoted to a foreman on a Texaco offshore oil platform. After two years, he returned to the lower 48 states settling in Woodland as the foreman of Texaco's Northern Drilling and Production Operations. Jack finished his career with Texaco as Superintendent of Production of the Los Angeles Basin and retired in January of 1986. During this period he had a wonderful son and daughter from his first marriage to Helen P. Phalen Mahaney.

On Sept. 11, 1987, he married Glenice Dean Fumasi of Williams and became an important citizen of that community. Jack organized the local blood drive for BloodSource; was the volunteer coordinator for Caltrans' Adopt-a-Highway Program on Highway 20 by the Williams Senior Citizens; helped maintain the local Catholic church; helped his friend Vern Ornbaun harvest his fields; and he was always available to do home repairs for those not able. He was presented the Williams Senior Citizen of the Year award in 1997 by the Rotary Club, and the Colusa Parlor No. 194 Native Daughters of Golden West Man of the Year award in 2000 for his contributions to the community. Not one for being idle, he loved tinkering with his old, red 16-foot Glasspar boat, fishing in the Sacramento River with his buddy Mr. Frank Shields and taking his beloved dog Mac for runs in the nearby fields.

Jack was very proud of his family. He is sorely missed and lovingly remembered by his wife, Glenice; his ex-wife, Helen "Pat" Mahaney; children, Patrick Mahaney and Ann Mahaney Meshot; stepchildren, Marsh Peart, Dean Fumasi, Belinda Southworth, and Betty Welch; grandchildren, Allison and Lauren Mahaney; Isabel and Gillian Meshot; Theron, Briley and Fallon Fumasi; Jed, Jake and Monique Welch; Brandi Stegmann; Laura Newson; Debra Peart Vechler; and eight great-grandchildren.

The family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Williams Community Center in care of Ron Simmons, Williams, 95897.

MANSFIELD

Robert L. 'Dick' Mansfield

Robert L. "Dick" Mansfield died Aug. 10, 2002, at the age of 78.

When he moved to Davis to teach sixth grade in 1951, he thought he would only be in Davis for a couple of years. He arrived having just graduated from San Jose State College where, with the assistance of the GI Bill, he studied history. He had hoped to gain a few years of teaching experience before moving on.

Instead, he made Davis his home for more than 50 years.

Born Sept. 17, 1923, he was the youngest of three children, all sons, born to Margaret Garcia Mansfield and Walter Plaskett Mansfield. He spent his childhood living in King City, leaving at age 17 to enlist in the U.S. Navy to assist in the war effort.

For more than 35 years, he worked in the Davis Joint Unified School District. During his tenure he served as a teacher, coach and principal. He also ran an adult education program. From 1967 to 1979, he was principal of Davis Senior High School.

His love of his adopted hometown was evidenced by his civic involvement. As the community grew, he participated in developing many of the features associated with Davis today. He was an active member of the Davis Rotary Club and served on a variety of city boards such as the Davis Planning Commission. During his involvement with the commission, he advocated for the development of a neighborhood park plan.

He liked good food, good wine and good friends. He played poker and golf with a tight-knit group of friends for more than 35 years. He was an avid supporter and fan of high school and UC Davis sports. He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in sporting events.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; son, Richard and his wife Gail; and daughter, Marianne Mansfield Putnam and her husband Neil. His is further survived by his grandchildren, Margot and Richard Mansfield of Davis and Mollie of Louisville, Colo.

Friends are invited to attend a memorial service at St. Martin's Episcopal Church on Wednesday at 2 p.m. A reception at Stonegate Country Club will immediately follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to the Rotary Youth Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 185, Davis, CA 95616.

MANTAY

Michele Mantay

Michele Mantay passed away in her sleep at her Davis home on April 8, 2003. She leaves her beloved friend, Fred W. Lorenz, and her mother, Marilyn M. Mantay of Davis. Her father, William R. Mantay, predeceased her.

Born in Sacramento on June 21, 1956, she was 46 years old.

Wheelchair-transported for many years, she and her service dogs -- first Nestor and then Vishnu -- became a familiar sight in the community from 1981, when she enrolled at UC Davis. It was her great pleasure as a student to sing in the University Chorus and to work with children in the early childhood education center.

She earned a bachelor's degree in human development with a minor in music. She also earned a master's degree in education with an emphasis on child life at Mills College and completed her internship in child life at the UC Davis Medical Center.

A bird-raising hobby went public when she sat behind her table selling quail eggs at the Davis Farmers' Market. Failing health eventually curtailed her activities but did not diminish her love of friends, of children, of nature, music -- and shopping. Nor did she lose courage during a long illness.

Besides her loved family and friends in Davis, Michele Mantay leaves her aunt and uncle, Frances and Tom Mankey of North Hollywood, and many cousins. Her cousin, Robin Mankey of Redwood City, is joining Davis friends to plan a celebration of her life at the Gazebo in the UC Davis Arboretum, on Sunday, April 27, at 3 p.m. Interment is planned at the Davis Cemetery.

Gifts in memory of Michele Mantay may be made to the Davis Art Center,1919 F St. in Davis. In future, children without money of their own would be able to use "Michele's money" to shop in the Children's Secret Store during the Art Center's annual Holiday Sale.
