TRAVIS

Travis M. Travis

Travis M. Travis of Davis died Aug. 21, 2003. She was 91.

She was born Oct. 14, 1912, to Virgil A. and Ursa B. Patterson. She later recalled how as a child she helped her father on their Fresno farm while her mother often traveled the San Joaquin Valley working in the fruit-packing industry.

Travis' own early trips to town were in a horse-drawn wagon, and she remembered her dad crank-starting their first automobile. Her family moved to the city when she was in grammar school.

She married Robert Travis in 1937. They lived in and around Oakland, where Robert worked in the plumbing trade. She also worked in the family plumbing business for many years, before beginning a 20-year career as an executive secretary for Hale's Testing Laboratory in Oakland. During that time she was active in her local PTA and on several city committees.

After her husband's death in 1984, she moved to Davis to be near family.

She planned to enjoy the easy life here, but quickly discovered the Davis Senior Center. She served three terms as president of the Senior Citizens of Davis Inc., and was named "Davis Senior of the Year" in 1994. She also organized the ceramics program and did much of the shopping for day-to-day supplies for the center. Only her failing health slowed her activities.

She witnessed incredible change during her lifetime, her family noted, from traveling in that horse-drawn wagon to a 747 jet airliner. She remembered her family's first telephone, especially the party line, and she used an early word processor in her secretarial career; later, she learned about computers and the Internet.

She is survived by sons Roger and Robert and his wife Mary, grandchildren Robert, Lyn, Jesse and Carly, and great grandchildren, Aubrianne and Zachary.

No memorial service was held, at the request of the deceased.

TRUE

Delbert L. True

Delbert L. True, professor emeritus of anthropology at UC Davis, died June 20, 2001. Born in San Pedro on Aug. 31, 1923, he was 77.

A devoted field archaeologist even in his youth, prior to his formal studies he had investigated prehistoric settlement along the coast and in the hills of southern California and eastward to the high desert. After serving in the army air force during World War II, he moved with his wife and children to northern San Diego County, where he started an avocado ranch, but at the same time he continued to pursue archaeological investigations in the region.

With the formation of a program in archaeology at the department of anthropology at UC Los Angeles in the 1950s, he commenced his formal studies at that campus. He received his bachelor's degree in 1961, entered the graduate program at the University of Arizona and subsequently completed his doctorate degree at UCLA in 1966. During this time he was a recipient of the Woodrow Wilson Graduate Fellowship at the University of Arizona and of the Woodrow Wilson Dissertation Fellowship at UCLA.

On completing his degree at UCLA, he began his academic career in the department of anthropology at UCD.

Initially he spent several years of archaeological investigations in the mountains and high deserts of northern Chile under a program established by scholars from UCLA and Chile.

He subsequently returned to Davis and to a long career of distinguished teaching and research.

His legacy includes not only his research and publications on the prehistory of the Chilean Andes and of southern California but also investigations into the prehistory of the interior foothills and adjacent valleys of northern California. These studies have contributed new and important data to the archaeological record of the area. He worked closely with a host of graduate students, many of whom have gone on to make significant contributions to the discipline.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Juanita True; his children, Douglas, Dianna and Jack and their spouses; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services were private.

TUFTS

Warren G. Tufts

Yolo County native Warren Tufts died at the family home west of Winters on Aug. 13, 2003. He was 86.

Born in a little house on Third Street in Davis on May 15, 1917, he grew up attending schools here and, in 1940, graduated from UC Davis with a degree in agriculture. He was working for the California Tree Fruit Agreement when he met his first wife, Edna Mae (Eddie) Markofer of Elk Grove.

With the outbreak of World War II, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served as an instructor teaching the reading of radar maps, then cutting-edge technology.

In 1946, he and his wife returned to the ranch west of Winters that his father, UCD pomology professor Warren P. Tufts, purchased in 1922. Over the years they acquired other properties and began growing apricots and peaches.

In 1958, frustrated with the marketing options available to them, the couple began packing and marketing their own fruit under the Tufts Ranch label. They developed worldwide markets and in time added other commodities, like pears, walnuts, kiwi and prunes.

His wife and business partner, Eddie, died in 1984.

Tufts developed many business relationships and personal friendships but his love for his family directed his life, especially in his later years. Outside of his loved ones, his dedication to business ranked second only to golf -- he remained an avid player into his 80s.

His many affiliations included being a charter member of the California Apricot Advisory Board, a member of the California Tree Fruit Agreement's peach committee, a board member of the California Grape and Tree Fruit League, the first chairman of the California Kiwifruit Administrative Committee, a judge of county exhibits at the State Fair for many years, and a member of the Winters Joint Unified School District board -- he served as president during the construction of Waggoner School.

In 1985, he married Bessie (Pauli) Adams Riegels and moved to Woodland.

He is survived by his wife Pauli of Woodland; sister Margaret Graham of Palm Desert; children Vicki Jacobs and her husband Tom, Sandy Vickrey and her husband John, and Stan Tufts and his wife Colleen, all of Winters; and grandchildren Jenni Jacobs, Chad, Jack and Devon Vickrey, Tyler Tufts and Patrick Ehrman, all of Winters, and Dillon, Graham and Ian Dougherty of Woodland.

He is also survived by his wife's children, Bill Adams of San Rafael and Jamie Dougherty and her husband Dan of Woodland.

Services are tentatively set for 4:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Winters.

Donations in Warren Tufts' name may be made to Yolo Hospice, the American Lung Association or the donor's charity of choice.

TURKOVICH

Walter Turkovich

Walter Turkovich passed away on Feb. 27, 2004, on the family farm near Winters. He was 85 years old. Born in Trinidad to an immigrant family from Croatia, he spent his childhood in Richmond. He had six older sisters and a twin brother. As a boy, he worked delivering newspapers and during the depression worked at silver mines in Nevada. He served four years in the Army during World War II and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands with a Coast Artillery Unit. Following the war he returned to Richmond and owned and operated a Union Oil service Station. He married Helen Hirth, started a family and built a house in El Sobrante. He enjoyed duck hunting and fishing with his friends and relatives all over California.

In 1961 the family moved to Winters to farm the prune orchard that he and Helen had purchased three years earlier. Walt and Helen worked hard to expand their farming operation to include apricots, peaches and almonds, walnuts and kiwi fruit. He saw the farm operation grow from a labor intensive industry to a more mechanized operation through the use of mechanical harvesting equipment, drip irrigation, constantly improving the insect control measures, the irrigation techniques to produce top quality fruits and nuts. He was a member of Sunsweet Growers and was involved with other local growers of apricots and peaches in Royal Dryers, a fruit drying co-op.

His son, Joe, returned to the farm in 1980 and gradually took over the farm management leaving Walter and Helen more time to travel. They visited Croatia, where he had relatives, other parts of Europe, Panama Canal, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Canada the U. S. and Alaska. He continued to enjoy fishing and spent many vacations at Silver Lake near Tahoe and at Bucks Lake in Plumas County.

Walter was known for his friendly, jovial manner, his hunting and fishing stories and his hard work in building up the farming operation. He and Helen enjoyed entertaining large groups of relatives and friends for picnic barbecues during the spring, summer and fall. He was fond of his pet dogs and cats. More recently he enjoyed visiting older farmer friends who couldn't get around much anymore.

He is survived and will be greatly missed by his wife Helen; children and their spouses Rosanne and Jon Seitz of Grover Beach, Tony and Joan Turkovich of Winters, Marianne and Alan Pantle, of Ione, Joe Turkovich and Fred and Deborah Turkovich, all of Davis; grandchildren Ben, Roslyn and Natalie Seitz, Lorraine Sullivan, Kristin and Philip Pantle, Michael, Christopher and Daniel Turkovich and Elise and Avery Turkovich.

TURPIN

Laura M. Turpin

Laura Mitchell Turpin died on June 7, 2002, in San Diego. Born July 25, 1922, in Sidney, Neb., she was 79 years old.

She met her husband, Paul W. Turpin, in San Diego. They were married in San Francisco on March 23, 1944.

She worked most of her life. Earlier this year, she wrote the story of her working life for an issue of the Turpin Family Journal, which she and Paul published.

When she found her first job, it was 1937, one of the toughest years of the Great Depression. The small cafe she worked in was next to the train tracks and mainly fed the men who worked for the railroad.

Determined to get out of Nebraska and move to the West Coast, she managed to graduate a year early, in 1940.

Times were still tough and she sold cosmetics door-to-door and was then hired as an usherette by a movie theatre in 1941. She wore the usherette's uniform proudly and learned to use her flashlight with skill.

When men began to go to war, she was hired by an insurance office as a bonded clerk and by the end of the war had become assistant office manager.

During the course of her career and travels, she became specialized in the administrative areas of law enforcement, social and emergency relief work. She worked at the U.S. Probation and Parole Office for the Southern District of California of the U.S. courts from 1974 until her retirement in 1985.

Two years ago, she organized a surprise birthday party for her husband and flew children and grandchildren in from all across the country. She managed the complicated affair with her usual skill and flair, as every hotel room had a bouqet of her signature carnations.

She is survived by her husband, Paul W. Turpin, who just moved to Davis where their daughter, Linda Turpin, lives with her husband, Bob Johnson, and children Alice, Ellen and Cord. She is further survived by her daughter Nancy Turpin and son-in-law Robert Gordon of Chicago; and son Paul Bruce and daughter-in-law Susan Jones of Las Vegas.

Family and friends recently held a memorial service for her in San Diego. A second remembrance will take place in Davis.

TURPIN

Paul W. Turpin

Paul W. Turpin was interred in the Davis Cemetery on Sept.16, 2002, with his wife, Laura Mitchell Turpin. He died in Davis on Aug. 26, 2002, at the age of 82.

Born on July 11, 1920, in Georgia and raised in Sweetwater, Tenn., he moved to Davis this summer to be near his daughter Linda.

Turpin retired from the U.S. Navy after a 30-year career that included action in two wars. He was an athlete from his high school years on and excelled in a broad range of sports, including football and basketball. He was a Golden Glove boxing champion and crewed on Navy yachts off the East Coast for a time.

Throughout his naval career, he was a champion doubles and singles tennis player in military championships. In the late 1940s, he collapsed after winning a grueling championship singles match in full equ
