WHITAKER

Nancy Whitaker

Nancy Whitaker - a devoted mother, a tireless community activist and a committed advocate for wildlife and their threatened habitats - died Oct. 29, 2004, at her home in Davis. She was 73.

Born Aug. 26, 1931, in Monterey, she was raised in Pacific Grove. Her ancestors include many early settlers of Monterey County; she also was a member of the Coast Miwok tribe of California.

She moved to Davis in 1963. She believed deeply in the importance of community and she gave much of her time and energy to that cause. She was active in the West Davis schools, and in community action groups that advocated responsible growth within the city. She was also vocal through her many letters to the editor on behalf of education, development and wildlife habitat issues.

She had a great impact through her work as an animal rights advocate for the Animal Protection Institute of America. Her work on behalf of wild horses in the western United States is well known in the animal rights field and within the Bureau of Land Management.

She advocated for all wildlife, including wild horses and domestic cats and dogs, and she was a believer in the habitat protection concept that encompasses all wildlife in their struggle to coexist with encroaching human development.

"Nancy spoke up for healthy communities for people and for animals," her family says. "Her voice will be missed."

She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Patty and Jerry Cummings of Los Gatos; sons, Larry Whitaker of Reno and Jim Whitaker of Winters and their spouses; daughters Lynn Hurd of Las Cruces, N.M., and Suzy Whitaker of Sacramento and their spouses; and five grandchildren.

WHITCOMBE

Marie Louise Whitcombe

Marie Louise Whitcombe died peacefully in her long-time Davis home in the company of her family on August 5, 2005, at age 96.

Services will be held at Davis Community Church on Thursday at 5 p.m. A celebration will follow at Tandem Properties offices, 3500 Anderson Road in Davis.

Marie was an only child, born in San Francisco, to John and Cecilia Olsson on December 9, 1908. Both of her parents emigrated from Sweden. Her father was a sea-going captain who, in his later years, was a tugboat pilot in San Francisco Bay.

In her early twenties, Marie was the Garden Editor for Sunset Magazine. She loved her career, family members said, and came to UC Davis in 1934 to enhance her knowledge of gardening. She was one of only thirty-five women in attendance at that time, many becoming lifelong friends. She loved to tell the story that she arrived at college with a fur coat, a jump-seat Ford convertible, a German Shepard and very little else.

There she met Harry Whitcombe, her husband for over fifty years, who also attended UC Davis. The couple was married in November of 1936 at the home of Warren Tufts, a professor of pomology at UCD for whom Marie worked.

Harry graduated from UC Berkeley in entomology in 1938 and returned to Davis to continue research in pollination and bee genetics. The couple gradually accumulated a number of beehives and, working together, their apiary become one of the most successful in the United States. Because of these pioneering research projects, they were featured in articles published in The Saturday Evening Post, Reader's Digest and in a book, "Bees Are My Business," published by Putnam.

Throughout her life, Marie was active in Republican women's organizations in Yolo County. She was committed to traditional values such as a strong work ethic, loyalty and honesty. She had a flare for style and creativity, her family said, and her hobbies included gardening, flower arranging and decorating for events. She played the violin in the Sacramento Symphony. She was an avid tennis player and, well into her eighties, a golfer as well. When she retired from golf, the women's golf club at El Macero made her an honorary member of the "Niners."

She raised three children in Davis and was active in their school and outside activities. In her later years, she and Harry traveled extensively in Canada, the United States and Mexico. She loved to visit all the friends she'd made in Acapulco over the years, her family said, always bearing clothing and gifts upon arrival.

During the last ten years, she was known as the creator of the holiday baskets for the Children's Secret Store at the Davis Art Center Holiday Sale. She spent each year gathering baskets, toys and ornaments, often at garage sales.

Marie was adored by everyone who knew her, her family said. She touched the lives of many and inspired them with her generosity and her positive outlook on life. A social butterfly, Marie lit up any room she walked into, they added, and over the years she made sure to walk into many rooms.

She is survived by her children, John Whitcombe and his wife Judy, Nancy Roe and her husband Bill, and Ken Whitcombe and daughter-in-law, Donna Whitcombe, all of Davis; grandchildren Joe Whitcombe and his wife Elena of Davis, Sandy Whitcombe and her husband David of Los Angeles, Eric Roe and his wife Channa of Davis, and Whitney Thornburg and her husband Matt of San Francisco; and great-grandchildren Sam Whitcombe of Davis, Veronica Roe of Davis, and Edie Whitcombe of Los Angeles.

The family requests any memorial contributions be sent to CommuniCare Health Centers, 2040 Sutter Place in Davis.

WHITWORTH-
VILLANUEVA

Nelma Whitworth-Villanueva

After a long, full life, Nelma Whitworth-Villanueva died on Dec. 5, 2005. Born Feb. 27, 1919, in Stella, Mo., to Earl E. and Iola Jenny (Hogan) Carey, she was 86 years old.

A graveside service will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at Clovis Cemetery in Clovis.

She came to California with her parents and two sisters, Leota and Freda, in the late 1920s in a new wood-panel truck. They settled on a ranch in Clovis, which remained the family home for more than 50 years.

She graduated from Clovis High School in 1939 and moved to Tiburon during World War II, working in the shipyards in Sausalito to help the war effort. No ship was too tall for her to climb.

She moved to Davis in 1952 with her young family. Once her children were grown, she went work at the University Lodge as the head housekeeper and retired following more than 25 years. She loved meeting and talking to the many visitors.

She traveled extensively, visiting Ireland, Germany, France, Mexico and Scotland, to name a few destinations. She also enjoyed traveling around the United States with her two sons as part of the Model A Club, and participating in many square dancing clubs.

She loved the color red, particularly red roses; this is most evident to those who visited her back yard where planted more than 100 rose bushes.

“She was an independent lady, impatient at times, spunky and very spirited - perhaps due to her Irish background,” her family says. Although she could be stern, her family was very well aware of her deep love for them.

Christmas was her favorite time of year, and every room in her home was decorated. Wonderful memories were created as family members gathered together in her home each Christmas season. She had a rare talent as a seamstress and could create anything she would see, and she had a real love of antiques and clocks.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Don Whitworth.

She is survived by two children, Sharla Bayer of El Macero and Ron Whitworth of Oregon City, Ore.; a brother, Gene Carey of Fresno; a sister, Freda Wagner of Florence, Ore.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren with another expected in March.

The family wishes to thank staff of Palm Gardens in Woodland for all their kindness and exceptional care of a beloved family member.

The family requests that any memorial donations or gifts be made to The Alzheimer's Society. Friends who would like to sign a virtual guest book may do so by visiting www.davisfuneral.com.

During those years, Chet operated a successful construction business, Klinkhammer and Willey, owned jointly with his brother-in-law Earl Klinkhammer of Woodland. The company was highly respected for its quality construction of custom homes and commercial buildings, such as Bill & Kathy's Restaurant in Dunnigan. Many homes in Woodland's southwestern neighborhoods where built by Chet and his crews during the post-war building boom until his retirement in 1985. The Great Depression required that Chet work to support his family immediately out of high school, but he remained a Trojans fan for the rest of his life. During his years in Los Angeles, Chet excelled in tennis, winning a championship of countywide games in the early 30s.

To acquire work during the Depression, Chet moved his mother, Caroline Willey, to Oregon in 1932 and began work in ranching, logging, and construction. He worked on the construction of the Columbia River railroad prior to completion of the New Deal dams, witnessing the last days of Indian fishing at Celilo Falls on the Columbia, prior to indundation by Bonneville Dam's reservoir. While working on a ranch near Klamath Falls, Oregon, Chet met a local farmers daughter, Fern Klinkhammer, whom he married in 1939 in Reno, Nevada.

Chet served in the U.S. Army during World War II, specializing in aircraft mechanics. He and Fern had two sons - Earl and Wayne Willey, born in 1942 and 1946 respectively. Both sons attended Woodland schools and graduated from Woodland High School. Each year the family trekked north to the Mt. Lassen area for summer trout fishing and to the Eagle Lake area for fall mule deer hunting. Chet was an active booster of civic improvements, including donating time and materials to the construction of several baseball fields in Woodland.

For two summers, 1940 and 1941, he worked on a friend's family farm to gain experience in agriculture, which was a requirement for acceptance to Cornell University's Agriculture College. He enrolled in Cornell's agronomy department in 1941 and had the top grades in his freshman class.

During his freshman year, he met Pat Moore at a Quaker conference on causes of war; they married on Nov. 27, 1943, in Sage Chapel at Cornell while he was on a two-day leave from the U.S. Army. Williams was a second lieutenant with the field artillery and served in Okinawa during World War II.

He returned to Ithaca, N.Y., in August 1946 and joined Pat at Cornell to complete his bachelor's degree, master's degree and Ph.D. During this time, the couple had three children -- David, Kathy and Andy. He loved to take his family on outings and hikes.

Williams was hired by the UCD department of agronomy in April 1951. He became a full professor and, retiring after 41 years, was presented with three large volumes of his works. Board by board, the family carried the cabin down Cathedral Mountain a quarter-mile to their property, where Williams built the cabin again. His favorite spring activity involved planting berseem clover at the university farm and planting corn, tomatoes and squash at home.

Under the auspices of the Yolo Community Care Continuum, which the Williamses helped create, Bill and Pat purchased or rented 10 buildings to provide services for mentally ill adults: The Farm House, Safe Harbor Crisis House, Haven House Social Center, Be House, Headway Vocational Center, Men's Co-op House for 5, Women's Co-op House for 3, The Light House Social Center, Pine Tree Gardens West, Pine Tree Gardens East and the recent purchase of property for a residential home for elder care.
